The custom recovery lets you flash custom firmware packages (roms in scene speak) (something like Lineage or Graphene). What you really need is bootloader unlock, which lets you flash a custom recovery (typically TWRP or Team Win Recovery Project). Beyond that, it would just get all fucky, and nobody could figure it out. well, when I tried it on an HTC One M8, a phone that was not designed to have its bootloader unlocked, I ended up corrupting my internal memory. In that case, you turn to a tool that forcibly unlocks the bootloader. Two, and what nobody really wants to talk about, not all phones let you unlock the bootloader. One, there was just an article about how the Snapdragon chips in Android phones had some vulnerability, it doesn't matter what custom firmware you run now.
